Fw: Polícia Francesa vai migrar de Windows XP para Ubuntu

URL:

URL: http://www.softwarelivre.org/news/10745
O time da BBC
configurou 2 sistemas Intel dual quad-core com 4GB de RAM e 4TB de
disco com sistema de arquivos XFS rodando OpenSUSE Linux.

Australia, independent open source consultant Ricardo Gonzalez has told
of how he has helped bring 23,000 Linux PCs to over 1000 schools in the
Philippines: 'Ministers in the Filipino government now understand Linux
can do so much for so little outlay.'" The slow process of educating a
government that knew only Microsoft is especially well described in
this piece.

Fw: SimCity Source Code Is Now Open

Tolkien writes "Source code for SimCity has been released under the
GPLv3. For legal reasons the open source version was renamed
Micropolis, which was apparently the original working title. The OLPC
will also be getting a SimCity branded version that has been QA'ed by
Electronic Arts. Some very cool changes have been made by Don Hopkins,
who updated and ported what is now Micropolis. (Here is an earlier
Slashdot discussion kicked off by a submission Don made.) Among other
things, it has been revamped from the original C to using C++ with
Python. Here is the page linking all the various source code versions.
Happy hacking!"

HD Monitor Causes DRM Issues with Netflix

URL:
http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/210812294/article.pl
Jeremiah Cornelius points us to Davis Freeberg's blog, where he
discusses his "nightmare scenario" of losing access to his
DRM-protected purchases by upgrading his PC monitor. "When I called
them they confirmed my worst fears. In order to access the Watch Now
service, I had to give Microsoft's DRM sniffing program access to all
of the files on my hard drive. If the software found any non-Netflix
video files, it would revoke my rights to the content and invalidate
the DRM. This means that I would lose all the movies that I've
purchased from Amazon's Unbox, just to troubleshoot the issue. Because
my computer allows me to send an unrestricted HDTV feed to my monitor,
Hollywood has decided to revoke my ability to stream 480 resolution
video files from Netflix. In order to fix my problem, Netflix
recommended that I downgrade to a lower res VGA setup."

Another nasty DRM surprise from Netflix

Netflix DRM won't stream to HDD

When you buy into DRM technology, you put control over your computer in someone else's hands. This guarantees that unpredictable and unpleasant things will happen. Those with the DRM keys can decide that you no longer have the right to access the media you bought unless you agree to some new terms or buy some new tech, like Major League Baseball and Google Video have both done recently.

Apricot Team Selected For Fully Open Source 3D Game

crush writes "The Linux Game Tome notes that the final team to produce a fully Open Source 3D game using the CrystalSpace engine and Blender has been chosen. The project (known as Apricot) aims to produce a cross-platform, 3D game with completely Free (CCA) graphics, music and code. An important side-effect of the project is to improve open source tools for the professional game development industry." I look forward to more 3D games on my desktop, even if this one won't be the first. (And where is the open-source bus-driving counterpart to the under-rated FlightGear?)
