Yes Linus, Microsoft hating is a disease. And it's a pandemic

The submission by Microsoft of twenty thousand lines of code to the Kernel has, predictably, caused many an eyebrow to arch. The phrase “beware Greeks bearing gifts” comes swiftly to mind. I checked the press release. I also checked the calendar just to make sure I hadn’t fallen into a wormhole and emerged back on April Fools Day. I hadn’t. That reaction was probably replicated right across the free software community. Given Microsoft’s track record it’s hardly surprising. Perhaps what was more interesting was Linus Torvalds’ reaction. After all, this is not an inconsequential flame war about using Gnome or KDE.

Why the GNU GPL Still Matters

URL: http://linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2009-07-16-019-35-OS-LL

Open Enterprise: "One of the biggest issues for those attacking the GNU GPL seems to be the apparent contradiction between its desire to propagate freedom, and its refusal to give complete freedom to programmers – specifically, the freedom to take the code and make it closed."

Editor's Note: Freedom is Not Embarrassing

We've all heard the scornful criticism against idealism, as though it were something to be ashamed of, and mocking of the fundamental ideals of Free Software. I'm not embarrassed to have ideals, I am proud.

The Hidden Cost of Using Microsoft Software

URL: http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/_Y1GGS5Z7ik/The-Hidden-Cost-of-Using-Microsoft-Software

Glyn Moody writes "Detractors of free software like to point out it's not really 'free,' and claim that its Total Cost of Ownership is often comparable with closed-source solutions if you take everything into account. And yet, despite their enthusiasm for including all the costs, they never include a very real extra that users of Microsoft's products frequently have to pay: the cost of cleaning up malware infections. For example, the UK city of Manchester has just paid out nearly $2.5 million to clean up the Conficker worm, most of which was 'a £1.2m [$2million] bill in the IT department, including £600,000 [$1 million] getting "consultancy support" to fix the problems, which including drafting in experts from Microsoft.' To make the comparisons fair, isn't it about time these often massive costs were included in TCO calculations?"
