John Carmack, desenvolvedor e co-fundador da id software, durante seu discurso inaugural na QuakeCon 2011, anunciou: o código fonte do Doom 3 será liberado este ano. A publicação do código será feita depois do lançamento do jogo Rage, em outubro. Carmack também desafiou outros desenvolvedores para que liberem o fonte de seus jogos antigos.
Carmack foi o desenvolvedor líder dos jogos Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake e suas sequências.
