Linux Played a Vital Role In Discovery of Higgs Boson

URL: http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/_luPCWpRBUE/linux-played-a-vital-role-in-discovery-of-higgs-boson

An anonymous reader writes "Scientific Linux and Ubuntu had a vital role in the discovery of the new boson at CERN. Linux systems are used every day in their analysis, together with hosts of open software, such as ROOT. Linux plays a major role in the running of their networks of computers (in the grid etc.) and it is used for the intensive work in their calculations."

Stuxnet/Flame/Duqu Uses GPL Code

URL: http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/r69bm9gdxJ8/stuxnetflameduqu-uses-gpl-code

David Gerard writes "It seems the authors of Stuxnet/Duqu/Flame used the LZO library, which is straight-up GPL. And so, someone has asked the U.S. government to release the code under the GPL. (Other code uses various permissive licenses. As works of the U.S. federal government, the rest is of course public domain.) Perhaps the author could enlist the SFLC to send a copyright notice to the U.S. government..."

DRM books need to disappear. NOW. (Or, my horrific experience with www.kalahari.com)

URL: http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/drm_books_need_disappear_now_or_my_horrific_experience_wwwkalaharicom

DRM turned a 10 minute purchase into a 2 and a half nightmare (and counting). I wanted to buy a book: I ended up in a journey which made it dead clear that in a sane world, there is absolutely no space for DRM-protected contents. The only real warning I have about this article is that it may make you feel sick.

Next week at the 6th annual Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit in San Francisco, two Qualcomm Atheros engineers will be speaking about their Linux device driver development experiences and will go as far as calling for all proprietary drivers to be killed for good. They talk not just about killing proprietary drivers for Linux, but for all operating systems. Can the plans they lay out to kill all proprietary drivers work or is this just a big pipe-dream?

Microsoft adiciona suporte a Git no CodePlex

URL: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/NoticiasLinux/~3/frgjk9fGmzY/nl1332813039.html

Create a radio station in five minutes with Airtime 2.0 on Ubuntu or Debian

URL: http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/create_radio_station_five_minutes_airtime_20_ubuntu_or_debian

Airtime is the GPLv3 broadcast software for scheduling and remote station management. It supports both soundcard output to a transmitter, and direct streaming to an Icecast or SHOUTcast server. Web browser access to the station's media archive, multi-file upload and automatic metadata import features are coupled with a collaborative on-line scheduling calendar and playlist management. The scheduling calendar is managed through an easy-to-use interface and triggers playout with sub-second precision.
